Sideloading on Android Automotive — What's Possible
Android Automotive OS (AAOS) is a full Android system embedded in your car's infotainment. Unlike Android Auto (phone projection), AAOS runs independently — it has its own app store (Google Play for cars), storage, and the potential for sideloading.
However, sideloading on AAOS is more complex than phones:
- Manufacturers can restrict ADB access
- Not all cars expose developer options
- Some vehicles require dealer-level access for developer mode
- Safety considerations exist (don't install apps that distract while driving)
AnExplorer, once sideloaded, provides file management capabilities that the built-in car file manager lacks — USB drive browsing, media organization, and APK installation from USB drives.

The Sideloading Process
Step 1: Enable developer mode
On your car's infotainment display:
- Settings → System → About (path varies by manufacturer)
- Find "Build number" or "Software version"
- Tap it 7 times — "You are now a developer" message appears
- Go back to Settings → Developer options now visible
Polestar/Volvo: Settings → About → Build number → 7 taps GM: May be under Settings → About vehicle → Software → tap version 7 times
Step 2: Enable ADB
- Developer Options → USB debugging → enable
- For wireless: Developer Options → Wireless debugging → enable
- Note the car's IP address (Settings → Network → WiFi → your network → IP)
Step 3: Connect and install
Via WiFi (most convenient for cars):
- Laptop on same WiFi as car
adb connect [car-ip]:5555- Accept connection on car display
adb install AnExplorer.apk
Via USB (if WiFi ADB not available):
- Connect laptop to car's USB port with data cable
adb devices(verify car appears)adb install AnExplorer.apk
Step 4: Use AnExplorer in the car
After installation, AnExplorer appears in the car's app list:
- Browse car's internal storage
- Access USB drives plugged into car's USB ports
- Install additional APKs from USB drive (no laptop needed after initial setup)
- Manage media files on the car's system

Safety note: AAOS restricts certain app categories while the vehicle is in motion. Video and complex interaction apps typically only work when parked. This is a safety feature — don't attempt to bypass it.
USB Drive Management in the Car
One of AnExplorer's most practical uses in AAOS — managing USB media in the car:
- Plug USB drive with music/videos into car's USB port
- Open AnExplorer → USB drive appears
- Browse and play media files
- Organize content on the drive without removing it from the car
- Better than the car's built-in media browser (which often shows all files unsorted)
WiFi File Transfer to Car
Transfer files from phone to car wirelessly:
- Both phone and car on same WiFi (home garage, hotspot)
- Phone: AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select files (music, videos)
- Car: AnExplorer → WiFi Receive → accept
- Files land on car storage — available for offline playback
Useful for loading music playlists onto the car's system without USB drives.
Important Considerations
Safety first
- Never interact with the infotainment while driving
- Sideloaded apps should be set up while parked
- AAOS safety restrictions exist for good reason — respect them
- File management and APK installation = parking tasks only
Warranty implications
- Enabling developer mode typically doesn't void warranty
- Sideloading apps is using Android's built-in capability
- However, modifying system files or rooting COULD affect warranty
- AnExplorer only installs apps and manages user files — no system modification
OTA updates
- Manufacturer OTA updates may reset developer options
- You may need to re-enable developer mode after major system updates
- Sideloaded apps typically survive OTA updates (app data preserved)
