File Manager for BMW — Android Automotive
BMW has committed to Google Built-in Android Automotive OS for its new-generation electric and ICE vehicles, bringing the Google Play Store, Google Maps, and native Android apps directly into the vehicle's infotainment system.
AnExplorer installs directly from the in-car Google Play Store on all BMW vehicles with Google Built-in, providing a full-featured file manager purpose-built for the automotive environment.
Status: BMW's Google Built-in rollout is underway for 2025+ models. AAOS support is available on confirmed models listed below. Older BMW iDrive 7 and iDrive 8 vehicles without Google Built-in do not support native AAOS apps.

Install AnExplorer on BMW
From Google Play Store (recommended):
- On the BMW centre screen, open the Google Play Store
- Search for AnExplorer
- Tap Install — downloads over built-in LTE or home WiFi
- AnExplorer appears in the app launcher alongside BMW maps and media apps
Via USB sideload:
- Download the APK from /download on your phone
- Copy to a FAT32 or exFAT formatted USB drive
- Plug into the USB-C data port on the BMW centre console
- Open AnExplorer → USB Storage → tap the APK to install
Manage Dashcam and USB Media
BMW's BMW Drive Recorder (dashcam) saves clips to internal storage or an SD/USB drive depending on configuration. AnExplorer gives you direct access to these recordings:
- Open AnExplorer from the BMW app launcher
- Tap USB Storage to browse the dashcam drive
- Clips are organised by date and time in event folders
- Copy important recordings to Dropbox or OneDrive directly from the car
AnExplorer also handles music and podcast management — browse an audio library on a large-capacity USB drive without needing to use a PC.
Wireless Transfer from Phone
Transfer playlists, audiobooks, or podcasts from your Android phone wirelessly:
- On your phone, open AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select files
- On the BMW infotainment: AnExplorer → Network → WiFi Receive
- Accept — files arrive over the vehicle's WiFi or home network hotspot
Useful for refreshing music libraries before a long journey without connecting a USB cable.
BMW Curved Display — Large Screen Tips
BMW's Curved Display (12.3" + 14.9" or similar depending on model) gives AnExplorer a generous canvas for file browsing:
- List view works best for long folder trees on narrow BMW display aspect ratios
- Grid view is useful for browsing dashcam footage thumbnails
- Quick access from the home screen shortcut for USB → launch directly to dashcam folder
- BMW's split-screen mode allows AnExplorer + media player simultaneously
Cloud Access via BMW Connected LTE
BMW vehicles include ConnectedDrive LTE data. AnExplorer uses this connection for:
- Uploading dashcam clips to Dropbox or OneDrive automatically
- Accessing NAS/Nextcloud files over the vehicle hotspot
- Downloading podcast episodes directly in the car
BMW iDrive Compatibility — What Works and What Doesn't
Not all BMW infotainment generations support AAOS. Here is a clear breakdown:
| BMW Generation | Infotainment | AAOS Support | AnExplorer |
|---|---|---|---|
| iDrive 7 (pre-2022) | Proprietary BMW OS | ❌ | Not supported |
| iDrive 8 (2022–2024) | Proprietary BMW OS | ❌ | Not supported |
| iDrive 8 with Google Built-in (2025+) | Android Automotive OS | ✅ | Full support |
| Future BMW OS 10 | Android Automotive OS | ✅ Planned | Upcoming |
How to check: On your BMW's main screen, look for the Google Play Store icon in the app launcher. If it's present, Android Automotive is active and AnExplorer installs normally. If only Android Auto (phone mirroring) is available, your vehicle does not run AAOS natively.
Sideload Apps on BMW Android Automotive
Some apps are not available in the automotive Play Store. AnExplorer's APK installer lets you sideload any APK:
- Transfer the APK to a USB drive (FAT32 or exFAT formatted)
- Plug into the BMW data USB-C port in the centre console
- Open AnExplorer → USB Storage → navigate to the APK file
- Tap the APK → Install — the app appears in BMW's launcher
Useful for apps in development preview or fleet-specific enterprise tools.
Why AnExplorer on BMW?
BMW's in-vehicle app ecosystem is growing but remains curated for automotive use cases. AnExplorer fills several gaps:
- No native file manager — BMW OS has no built-in file browser; AnExplorer fills this gap entirely
- Dashcam management — copy and back up dashcam clips without returning to a PC
- USB music libraries — organise large audio collections stored on USB drives
- Cloud access on the move — ConnectedDrive LTE connects AnExplorer to Dropbox, OneDrive, and NAS while driving
- App sideloading — install apps not yet available in BMW's Play Store variant
