Volkswagen and Android Automotive
Volkswagen Group is transitioning to VW.OS — a new Android Automotive-based operating system replacing MIB3. Current Volkswagen models use MIB3 and do NOT support AAOS or AnExplorer.
Current Volkswagen Models — MIB3 Only (NO AAOS)
Volkswagen has not announced specific VW.OS timelines for Volkswagen-branded vehicles. The first VW Group cars to receive VW.OS will be Cupra models starting mid-2026 (Cupra Raval). Volkswagen brand vehicles may receive VW.OS starting 2027+, but this is not yet officially confirmed.
Why Current Volkswagen Models Cannot Run AnExplorer
- No Android Automotive — MIB3 is proprietary Volkswagen software
- No Google Play Store — Closed ecosystem with no app support
- No Native Apps — Cannot install any Android apps
- No Sideloading — Does not support APK installation
- Hardware Limitation — Not upgradeable via software
VW.OS — Coming 2026+
Volkswagen Group is replacing MIB3 with VW.OS — a full Android Automotive platform. First vehicles:
- Cupra Raval — mid-2026 (Europe), late 2027–2028 (Australia)
- Cupra Born (refresh) — 2026–2027
- Cupra Tavascan (update) — 2026+
- Skoda models — 2026–2027
- Volkswagen brand — 2027+ (no specific dates announced)
